Although disaster struck in the form of the coffee blight, Mackwoods adapted with the times and entered the arena of tea plantations.Whilst enjoying the distinction of being the second oldest mercantile establishment in Sri Lanka, Mackwoods is also the oldest member of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Today, it is a conglomerate of several companies engaged in a wide range of activities such as plantations, information technology, healthcare, agri business, industry, manufacturing, and import and export trading. It provides employment to nearly 10,000 individuals, and has under its umbrella, a land base of over 27,000 hectares.
